Abdominal Pain Q & A

What causes abdominal pain?

Abdominal pain can be caused by many factors, some which are mild and resolve on their own, and others which may indicate a serious underlying medical issue. Some of the most common causes include:

  • ulcers

  • food allergies

  • food sensitivity or intolerance

  • gallstones

  • liver or kidney issues

  • hernias

  • inflammatory bowel disease

  • irritable bowel syndrome

  • gas

  • upset stomach or stomach virus

  • food poisoning

  • appendicitis

  • gastrointestinal reflux disease

Does abdominal pain always require a doctor's visit?

Sometimes, but not always; for instance, some abdominal pain can be caused by gas that develops as a natural part of digestion and will resolve on its own but when pain is persistent, recurring or increases in strength, or when it's accompanied by vomiting, fever or blood stools, seeing a doctor is very important to determine the underlying cause and prevent potentially serious medical conditions from developing.

How is abdominal pain diagnosed?

Diagnosis begins with a medical history, including a discussion of when symptoms began and how symptoms have progressed, as well as a physical exam to locate the precise areas of discomfort. Once the initial exam is complete, you may need additional evaluation or testing, including urinalysis, blood tests or stool sample evaluation, or diagnostic procedures like endoscopy or colonoscopy, CT scan, ultrasound or x-ray to provide additional information about your condition.

How will my abdominal pain be treated?

That depends on the cause of your pain. Once your diagnosis is complete, your treatment can be customized to your specific needs. In some cases, lifestyle changes may be all you need to resolve your symptoms and start feeling better. In other cases, you may need medications to treat your underlying issues or even surgery to treat a hernia or bowel blockage.
